The drill pipe makes up the majority of the drill string leading back up to the surface. Each drill pipe includes a long tubular section with a specified outside diameter. At each end of the drill pipe are large diameter sections called tool joints; one end has a male connection while the other end has a female connection. Both ends are threaded to allow the tubular sections to be connected together.
